5 Strategies to Thrive in a Changing Environment

The world has changed, and as a result you must reassess, step up, and learn how to adapt to a shifting environment.

Change is coming at us from all angles and we’re expected to adjust in order to survive. How well we do so, will determine how we move forward in the future. To help you navigate successfully, here are 5 strategies which you can adopt to not only survive but thrive in this new changing environment:

  1. Breathe

Never before have people had to face this extent of turbulent change at such high speed. With every new development, more changes arise which we must adapt to in order to survive this crisis. It has never been more important for us to just breathe. We know change can cause anxiety. Recognizing the need to simply take regular, gentle breaths is a key technique for calming your anxiety and stress levels caused by unexpected changes. Here’s a quick breathing exercise you can use at any time during the day to help you practice breathing:

  • Close your eyes and then your mouth
  • Inhale quietly through your nose and count two four. One, two three, four!
  • Hold your breath and count to seven. One, two three, four, five, six seven!
  • Exhale the breath fully from your mouth, making a whoosh sound to a count of eight. One, two three, four, five, six, seven, eight!

If you make sometime every day to do this quick exercise at least once, we guarantee you will feel better.

2. Adjust your mindset

The initial step to effectively handling change is to assess your mindset: Where are you, how are you feeling and what do you need to do to not only survive but thrive in this unpredictable environment? Do you have the willingness to push traditional boundaries, ask yourself tough questions, and challenge your current mindset to help you make a shift to a higher level? You can either choose a warrior or a victim mindset. Which one will it be? Will you adopt a warrior mindset which means that you will face every obstacle head on and fight to your very last breath or choose to become a victim and see everything as a problem with no solutions.

Whether you choose to have a positive or negative mindset will determine how well you adapt to a changing environment.

3. Change your habits to stay productive

Productivity remains critical even as we are faced with such rapid change.  Where you work may have changed but the work itself probably hasn’t. Your employers and leaders still expect you to deliver and produce results. Living and working in this “new normal” requires you to examine your habits and determine whether they support you in this current environment. Real change happen when you do things differently and so transforming habits which are more aligned to your current reality will help you accomplish your daily goals.

Highly productive people who accomplish a lot each day aren’t exceptional, they’ve just learnt to master their daily habits which transforms their lives for the better.

4. Create and innovate

Allow your creative juices to flow. Change especially the difficult ones sometimes have us withdrawing into ourselves and not wanting to do more that the status quo. However, if we choose to view change as an opportunity to do things differently, this opens up a world of new possibilities. We can choose to create or recreate ourselves as well as various aspects of our lives. History has shown that many new innovative products, technology and companies are created during crisis times. Use this period to get creative or find innovate ways to develop yourself, bring new ideas to life or make changes to certain processes which may need an overhaul. Adopt an entrepreneurial mindset and used this time to ignite your innovative side.

5. Focus on execution

What is the difference between individuals that succeed and fail? One action word, execution. You can’t not execute and expect to thrive through change. There are profound shifts happening in the world today. Showing up every day and taking action consistently will make a difference in how you overcome what is thrown at you in your environment. When we are able to constantly achieve goals and targets we are more likely to feel accomplished and less uneasy with changes which we may be going through. Keep your focus on what you can control and make happen and that will definitely improve your ability to maneuver against changing times.
